I was always under the impression that the auto transmission in the LCI E90 was a no cost option because I thought I read somewhere that they increased MSRP to make it a no cost option. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

This 328i came up when I searched “manual BMW” in my local GVL craigslist. While not a manual, something else caught my eye, and that was a line on the window sticker:

Kinja'd!!!

That’s right, someone paid $1375 to ruin not have to shift gears in this E90, which I thought can’t be right it was a no cost option. Well, after some searching it appears I was wrong, and it was in fact always a cost option.

2008 (before the LCI) :

Kinja'd!!!

2011 (post LCI):

Kinja'd!!!

Well, guess I was wrong about the transmission costing options.

I feel like BMW, Mazda and a few other brands that have been traditionally manual-inclined usually have the automatic as a cost option.

Just be glad manuals aren’t upcharges...with certain cars, that’s the case now. The first one I remember was the Pontiac G8 before they canceled it, but I know there are several others, too (just can’t think of them).

It makes sense, I thought it wasn’t the case after the LCI, for some reason. Which I thought explained why it seemed like more pre-LCI cars were manual.

That’s actually kind of surprising.

They should be though. If it is a cost option, it’s more likely to be spec’ed on a higher trim version than a lower trim.

I think it’s just the case that when you sell 95% of your cars with auto, the lack of scale for the manual means higher overall costs across the entire supply chain. Even though manuals cost less to produce, once volume drops to a certain point, they become a special ty item.

If I go to Home Depot and find a $150 toilet, I can walk up to the counter and ask for it in black...but it’ll be $400+ (no kidding).

Almost every brand has charged $1k-$1,500 for automatics for as long as I can remember . I had to read the post several times, but the issue here was they allegedly raised the overall price of the car in order to offer the auto for free...but then they didn’t.

At least that’s my understanding.

Hmm I always thought that started with the F30 (which technically has the manual as a no cost option).

I don’t even care if manuals are up charge options — just give us the option!!

It must have started with the F30, since it didn’t start with the E90.

I agree with this, even if the uptake would be tiny.

It was a cost option up until the F30 to keep it in line with what they did with pricing internationally. If you look at other markets, they still charge extra to have the automatic. For the F30, they came to the realization that most people here didn’t order manuals, so they just bumped the price up slightly and made the automatic standard.

The automatic has traditionally been considered a desirable option that demanded a price premium over a manual, especially in third world markets. What you call ruining I call improving. It really varies from place to place.

I think these days manual transmissions *are* more costly than automatics.  Because development, EPA testing costs are amortized over just a few units.

Somewhat c heaper to build, but all your development and testing (especially US emissions testing and the like) has to be spread over a smaller number of transmissions, so you get less amortization. And that only gets worse as the number of cars with manual transmissions drops (last I saw US take rates on new cars were down around 2.5%, though obviously some performance cars have much higher rates).

Counterpoint: my auto is a damn godsend up in NY. As far as automatics go it definitely could be worse. It is also why I also got my mustang. I f I am going to row my own gears I am also going to get rid of every single driver aid.

Manual transmission should always be standard on every car, and automatics in all forms (ie no clutch pedal) should be a cost option.

I bet its still a cost option on most high end DSG equipped cars. I know its almost $ 3K to ruin the M2 Competition, and i’d wager it costs money to ruin the boxster/cayman twins as well.

That seems to be the case with a lot of DCT/DSG cars.

I know when I was selling new Fords the auto trans was a 1200 dollar option on both the Focus and Fiesta.

That’s certainly the case in the used market for some cars
